Wellcome to teachers’ aid, a blog specially made to improve your classes and to aid your rewarding but challenging teaching task: adult teaching. Adult learning and teaching can be approached in two ways: there are some teachers that see it as outstanding acomplishment and others who see it as the challenge which provide grown ups with what they need. Though it is true that, as Robert O’Neil points out, some adults fossilize, give up, try to find rule explanations and translations all the time, they also bring with them a strong motivation that should be used as a powerful resource for learning. We agree with the idea that adults learn slowly but more deeply than kids and teens and that, when it comes to learning English, they have clear reasons and purposes that should be catered for. That’s why this month entries are mainly focused on how to teach effectively. In this edition you will find: adult’s characteristics, (and the implications these caracteristics have on our teaching), some techniques to deal with disruptive behaviour, some theory about the controversy between Krashen and O’Neil regarding learning vs. acquisition in adult learners, their “motivators”, and some factors that are essencial for their learning. In conclusion, we see adult teaching as a challenge with barriers that can be broken down if we give our best. We are committed to enjoying our classes and investigating to improve them. Therefore we invite you to join us in this exciting project. We hope you enjoy reading this issue of Teachers’ Aid as much as we have enjoyed writing it. Finally, we want to express our gratitude to the teachers who post comments to share with us, and we invite all the teachers to do the same. We would love to hear from you!
